Thursday's D3 Daily Action: Demand an Independent Commission to Investigate the Trump Campaign's ties to Russia

Our democracy is in a state of emergency, and it is our duty to demand that Congress find out the truth about Trump, his administration, and their collective ties to Russia.

Can you tell Senators Michael Bennet and Cory Gardner that you're fed up with the Trump administration's outright lies, abuse of power, and complete disregard for the Constitution and rule of law?

Sen. Bennet - (202) 224-5852

Sen. Gardner - (202) 224-5941

SAMPLE SCRIPT: "The Senate can and should move to establish an independent commission—because the American people need and deserve answers about Donald Trump and his administration's entanglements with Russia and their efforts to cover them up, as well as Russia's meddling in the 2016 U.S. election. Trump's efforts to derail the FBI's investigation are grounds for impeachment. Congress must do everything it can to get the whole truth."

Our calls helped create the political pressure necessary to win the appointment of Robert Mueller as special counsel tasked, in part, with investigating ties between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

We need an independent group of investigators whom you can trust to put country before party.

Here's the good news: The political winds are shifting. Nearly half of registered voters now back impeaching Trump.

And now, amid a growing constitutional crisis, it's imperative that we take an aggressive stance and cast a broad net—because we know that the scandals and corruption sweeping our nation are bigger than even Trump.

It's time for the Senate and House to heed the demand of our fellow Americans for an independent commission charged with getting the answers we need—to ensure the health of our democracy and the well-being of its people.

March for TRUTH - TODAY!

FInd a MARCH FOR TRUTH near you.

In Colorado:
Grand Junction
Colorado Springs
Gunnison - 3:00PM, Corner of Main & Virginia

As questions mount regarding whether the White House has engaged in a cover-up and potentially obstruction of justice, the March for Truth is calling for elected leaders to fully investigate the Trump administration’s motives for interfering in the investigation of Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election and its ties to the administration.

Nonviolent demonstrations are planned nationwide to demand:

  • An independent commission must be established and Congressional investigations should be properly resourced and pursued free of partisan interests;
  • As much information should be made available to the public as possible, and as soon as possible;
  • Congress should require Donald Trump to release his tax returns to clarify his business interests and obligations to any foreign entity;
  • If crimes were committed or if collusion is discovered, it must be prosecuted.

“Women’s March organizers in states across the nation are working alongside local chapters of the March For Truth to make sure that June 3rd is a call for all Americans to come together as one and march to protect the very foundation of our democracy,” said Bob Bland of the Women’s March.

Other national partners include: Free Speech for People, Town Hall Project, The Opposition, and Progressive Democrats of America, in calling for a full and transparent investigation into how the Russians sought to interfere and undermine our democracy and electoral system. Thanks to YOU and thousands of other Americans speaking out to uncover the truth, the Department of Justice just appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a Special Counsel to investigate collusion between Trump and Russia.

Mueller’s appointment is a major step towards finding the truth, but it is not enough.

Please call our Members of Congress Representative Scott Tipton, Senator Michael Bennet and Senator Cory Gardner this morning to DEMAND that an independent commission investigates Trump’s ties to Russia.

Just this week, we learned that Trump asked former FBI Director James Comey to end an investigation into one of his national security advisors. We should have no confidence that Trump will sit idly by as he and his team are investigated.

This morning, we discovered that Michael Flynn and other advisers to Donald Trump’s campaign were in contact with Russian officials and others with Kremlin ties in at least 18 calls and emails during the last seven months of the 2016 presidential race, current and former U.S. officials familiar with the exchanges. Reuters

Only an independent commission can ensure that the investigation is free from Trump’s control.

Naming a special counsel does not eliminate the public’s need for an independent, bipartisan commission to hold its own inquiry.

Any special prosecutor appointed by Jeff Sessions’ Department of Justice still ultimately reports to the Trump administration, meaning we can not be certain that Trump won’t interfere. This is why only an outside commission can provide an objective inquiry into the matter.

Wednesday's D3 Daily Action

(Today's D3 Daily Action is a biggie... but this is a big deal that could have lasting implications for the Trump's Administration. Treason is NOT a bi-partisan issue. Please take a little extra time this morning to get through it all!)

Future generations may mark today as one of the truly dark days in American history, a history that may soon take an even more ominous turn.

President Trump’s sudden firing of FBI Director James Comey is a matter that should deeply concern every American, regardless of party, partisan politics or ideological leanings...

We need a special prosecutor. We need an independent investigation. There is, obviously, much we don’t know about what has just happened, why it happened and why now. Just as obviously there is much more, so much more that we need know. We need to damn the lies and expose the truth.
— Dan Rather, May 9, 2017

Congress has the power to create a special commission to conduct an investigation that is truly independent, bipartisan, and unbiased. It should do so immediately. PLEASE CALL Representative Scott Tipton, Senator Cory Gardner and Senator Michael Bennet to demand that Congress support an independent investigation into Russian Interference with the 2016 Election.

Yesterday, Trump dismissed FBI Director Comey who is tasked with investigating Russian interference in last year’s presidential elections. Trump cited Comey’s handling of his investigation into Secretary Clinton’s e-mail during the 2016 election and Comey’s mishandling of testimony before Congress on that topic. But of course, Trump’s timing is suspect. And now, after firing Comey, Trump will appoint a new FBI Director to look into his Administration’s connections with Russia.

Earlier this week, the American public also learned that Trump sat on his hands for 18 days after his White House Counsel learned that the National Security Advisor had lied to senior officials in the Trump Administration and was vulnerable to blackmail by Russia. Donald Trump’s inaction for so long raises alarming questions the American public deserves to have answered.

At this point, the connections between the Trump team and Russia create a tangled web of overlapping interests that are difficult to unpack or even to visualize but the graphic above starts to unravel Trump's ties to Russia.

The American people deserve the full story behind Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election. But the public cannot trust that Republican MoCs with close ties to Trump and his campaign will investigate the facts thoroughly and impartially. Republicans who were originally supposed to be leading investigations into Russia have:

Nor can the American people trust Trump officials, who themselves may also be subjects of the investigation, to impartially scrutinize the situation. Others advising the White House on ongoing relations with Russia have:

first meeting  on Trump's schedule this morning: Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov at the White House

For months now, Trump officials and Republican MoCs in both the House and Senate have wasted the American people’s time with their mishandling of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election.

Even after hearing damning testimony, Senate Republicans have failed to take threats to our national security seriously. In testimony to the Senate Subcommittee on Crimes and Terrorism, former Attorney General Sally Yates summed up what the Michael Flynn scandal is all about: “To state the obvious, you don’t want your national security advisor compromised with the Russians.” During the same hearing,  former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper revealed that multiple European allies passed intelligence to the U.S. on Trump campaign contacts with Russian intelligence agents in 2016. Clapper dismissed that this was about leaks: “The transcendent issue here is the Russian interference in our election process.” However, the Republican Senators present failed to probe into the White House’s shielding of Flynn, or the risks posed to U.S. national security.

The House has had its own problems investigating the Trump Administration’s ties to Russia. Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and a former member of the Trump transition team violated established protocols and broke congressional norms. He was lambasted by Democrats and Republicans alike for his unusual behavior. Finally, after announcement by the Ethics Committee that Nunes “may have made unauthorized disclosures of classified information,” Nunes temporarily recused himself from the the investigation into Russia. And now the House Committee on Ethics is conducting its own investigation—into the questionable actions of Rep. Nunes.

Enough is enough. The American people deserve better.

Congress has the power to create a special commission to conduct an investigation that is truly independent, bipartisan, and unbiased. It should do so immediately.

Precedent exists for this type of congressional action. In the aftermath of 9/11, Congress and President George W. Bush set up a special commission to investigate the attacks.  Moreover, MoCs of both parties support an independent investigation, including Senator John McCain (R-AZ).

MoCs have introduced bills in the House and Senate that propose setting up such a commission to examine Russian influence in the 2016 election. Rep. Eric Swalwell’s bill,  H.R. 356, the Protecting Our Democracy Act, already has bipartisan support, including co-sponsors from the entire Democratic caucus.  Senator Ben Cardin’s bill, S.27, has 24 Democratic co-sponsors. Both bills would establish a commission of independent experts to examine the facts regarding Russia and the 2016 election.

Keep the pressure on for an independent commission to investigate U.S. ties to Russia.  Let your Senators know that you are still paying attention to this issue, and demand an investigation to prove that the leaders of our country are trustworthy, qualified and not putting the U.S. at risk.

Call Senator Cory Gardner to ask him what he is doing to push for an independent investigation of the Russia scandal.  Let him know that the FBI's plans to merge the investigation are not enough.  Ask: "Senator Gardner, when will you cosign Senate Bill 27 to establish an independent commission to examine and report on the facts regarding the extent of Russian official and unofficial cyber operations and other attempts to interfere in the 2016 United States national election, and for other purposes?"

Call Senator Michael Bennet to thank him for co-sponsoring the bill on February 16, 2017.  Let him know that his constituents expect the Senate to keep the pressure on.

"We need an accounting — a serious, independent and bipartisan investigation of attempted Russian interference in the American presidential election.  This is larger than any one candidate or any one election," - Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) Read more at The Hill.

Call Rep. Tipton to Vote in Favor of Judiciary Review of Sessions

Tomorrow, thanks to Representatives Hakeem Jeffries and Ted Lieu, the scandal-ridden attorney general and his many connections to Russia will be the subject of a debate and vote in the House Judiciary Committee.

Reps. Jeffries and Lieu have requested evidence from the White House and Department of Justice about Attorney General Sessions (and Trump) "that could connect the Trump campaign with the Russian effort to compromise our democracy."1

But thus far, your representative, Scott R. Tipton, has not joined the more than 100 House members who are publicly supporting this congressional effort to shine a spotlight on Sessions' and Trump's connections to Russia.

Let’s make sure his Capitol Hill phones ring continuously with requests that he sign on to the "Dear colleague" letter being circulated now by Reps. Jeffries and Lieu.

Call Rep. Scott Tipton TODAY!!

You can say: "Congress must fully investigate Donald Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who lied under oath during his confirmation hearing about his connections to Russian officials. I'm in full support of Reps. Jeffries and Lieu, who are pushing for the truth on Wednesday. I urge Representative Tipton to sign on to their 'Dear colleague' letter in support of this necessary congressional oversight."

Call Senator Cory Gardner and Senator Michael Bennet and urge them to pause Trump-related legislation and appointments—starting with a halt to Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch's confirmation process—until the American people learn the full truth about Trump and Russia.

This week, FBI Director James Comey confirmed that the president of the United States and his associates are the subject of an active criminal investigation regarding "possible connections between President Trump’s campaign and Russia’s efforts to sabotage" November's election—to benefit Trump.

These allegations are remarkably serious. So serious that earlier today Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stood on the floor of the U.S. Senate to call for a delay on confirmation of Trump's Supreme Court nominee until this issue has been fully investigated.

How can Congress, in good conscience, agree to further Trump's agenda amid such serious allegations regarding possible illegal collusion with Russia? The answer is simple: It can't.

There's no other way to characterize this breaking news: The legitimacy of Trump's presidency and his entire administration is in question. And with so much yet unknown, Congress cannot consider Trump's agenda, especially the lifetime appointment of Neil Gorsuch.

That's why it's imperative that Congress halt every piece of the Trump agenda—and that the Senate heed Sen. Schumer's call to stop Supreme Court confirmation hearings—until a full and independent investigation has been conducted.

PS - The TrumpCare Bill will be voted on in the House TODAY. So, if you haven't yet called Representative Scott Tipton to tell him your thoughts, now is the time!

Friday's D3 Indivisible Action - Recusal is not Enough!

Call Colorado Senator Gardner, Senator Bennet and Representative Tipton to tell them that they should join Congress Members from other states who have already called for the resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Recusal is not enough! Ask that they make a public statement calling on Sessions to resign. If they won't, your next question is: why not?

Sessions lied under oath about his contacts with the Russian ambassador during the Trump campaign to which he acted as Foreign Policy Advisor.  Tell your Member of Congress that Sessions' successor must appoint a special prosecutor to lead a comprehensive investigation of the Trump campaign and the Trump administration's ties to the Russian government.

A little more background...

During his confirmation hearing, when asked by Senator Al Franken “if there is any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government in the course of this campaign, what will you do?," Sessions replied, “Senator Franken, I am not aware of those activities … I didn’t have – did not have communication with the Russians.”

The only way for Americans to be able to trust that our government can act with integrity -- to know that our top leaders aren't compromised by a foreign power, and to trust that the nation's top cop follows the law that he is duty-bound to enforce -- is for Attorney General Sessions to resign his post immediately and for his successor to appoint a special prosecutor to begin a comprehensive investigation of Donald Trump, his campaign, and his administration.

Anything short of that  puts our country's security, our free and fair elections, and our justice system at grave risk.

And for your viewing pleasure, here is a video from 1999: A younger Jeff Sessions stating the importance of prosecution for perjury.
